Aaron L. Carter rescued Lenora Sanders from burning, Lexington, Kentucky, February 26, 1987. Miss Sanders, 22, was in a bedroom of her apartment when fire erupted in another room. Carter, 34, sanitation worker, and two co-workers who were in the neighborhood learned of the fire and went to the apartment building. After two men entered the apartment for Miss Sanders but withdrew because of dense smoke, Carter entered the apartment, but he too was forced out by the smoke, which precluded visibility, and heat. He entered a second time, found Miss Sanders, and carried her out of the apartment. Miss Sanders was hospitalized for first- and second-degree burns, and she recovered.
