Alan Benoit attempted to rescue Margaret H. Bolinger from burning, Tempe, Arizona, August 10, 1985. Mrs. Bolinger, 87, was at home when fire broke out in her living room. Alerted to the fire, Benoit, 28, photojournalist, who was Mrs. Bolinger’s next-door neighbor, ran to Mrs. Bolinger’s front door and saw her lying on the floor about 15 feet into the house. Despite the flames in the living room, intense heat, and dense smoke, Benoit crawled through the living room to Mrs. Bolinger and pulled her by the ankles back to the door, where he was assisted in carrying her from the house. Mrs. Bolinger, who was severely burned, died a short time later. Benoit recovered from lesser burns. 60568-6989
