Alan Goldstein died helping to rescue Kari A. Swenson from assault, Big Sky, Montana, July 16, 1984. Miss Swenson, 22, was jogging in Gallatin National Forest when she was abducted by two armed men, who then kept her chained to a tree overnight in their remote camp. Goldstein, 36, ranch foreman, had joined a search party which formed when Miss Swenson was reported missing, and early the next morning he and a partner came upon the abductors’ camp. Though warned by Miss Swenson that the men were armed, Goldstein remained at the scene, taking cover, and called for help over his radio. When he pulled out his gun and told the abductors to surrender, one of them raised his rifle and shot Goldstein, killing him. The abductors fled, leaving Miss Swenson behind, but they were apprehended five months later. Miss Swenson, rescued by police who were led to the scene by the partner, was hospitalized for a gunshot wound inflicted by the abductors during her ordeal. She recovered. 60070-6961
