Albert A. Schmitt died attempting to save Gertrude E. Wiley from drowning, Albany, New York, May 29, 1917. Gertrude, 17, was carried into Washington Park Lake at night in the side-car of a motorcycle, which had got beyond control, and she became distressed 16 feet from shore, where the water was eight feet deep. Schmitt, 21, tiler, responding to calls for help, ran 350 feet, removed his coat, waded a few feet, and dived toward Miss Wiley. His head was seen at the surface beside her a few seconds and then went under the surface. He and Miss Wiley were drowned. 18964-1443
