Albert C. Campbell, 26, machinist, saved Frank H. Moore, 9, from drowning, Claremont, New Hampshire, October 27, 1912. Frank ventured onto the Sugar River in a rowboat and was swept toward a dam 15 feet high. He jumped into the water 100 feet above the dam and called for help. Campbell, removing his topcoat, coat, and shoes, dived into the water and swam to Frank, who had sunk 30 feet from the bank. He brought Frank to the surface and tried vainly to swim with him against the current, the speed of which was 6 m.p.h. They were carried toward the dam, but as they passed under the corner of a house that overhung the water immediately above the dam, a man reached down, seized Campbell’s hand, and helped them out of the water. Frank was unconscious but was revived. Campbell suffered only from a cold. The boat was demolished on rocks below the dam. 9508-1220
