Albert E. Butterfield, 27, physician, died attempting to save Dorcas M. Worsley, 20, from drowning, Asilomar, California, August 14, 1927. Miss Worsley was swimming in the Pacific Ocean about 350 feet from shore at Asilomar Beach, and she became tired and was unable to make progress toward shore. A young woman who was a good swimmer supported her briefly. Butterfield waded from shore and then swam rapidly for 175 feet to Miss Worsley. He got behind her and gave her a push toward shore. She went over the crest of a wave and then with great difficulty swam to wadable water. After Butterfield had given Miss Worsley the push, he disappeared and drowned. 27982-2393
