Albert E. Hurwith saved Janet MacMillan from drowning, Long Beach, California, September 5, 1925. While Miss MacMillan, 19, was jumping the waves in shoulder-deep water in San Pedro Channel, she lost her footing and was carried into deep water. She could not be seen from shore because of darkness. Hurwith, 28, dentist, who was almost fully clothed and was unaccustomed to swimming in rough water, plunged through breakers four to five feet high and swam 100 feet farther to a point near Miss MacMillan. Then by the aid of searchlights on shore, Hurwith saw Miss MacMillan and swam a few feet to her. He supported her for 10 minutes until they were taken into a lifeboat. Both were nearly exhausted. 25616-2134
