Albert G. Peterson, 38, assistant chief lineman, sustained fatal injuries attempting to save Robert Pontet, 73, retired, from burning, Great Falls, Montana, April 22, 1919. Pontet was in bed on the third floor of his home when the house caught fire on that floor. He did not leave his bed. Peterson ascended a burning stairway to that floor, found Pontet after a considerable search, and attempted to take him to a window, but Pontet resisted him. Peterson went to the window for air but returned and made another attempt to take Pontet to the window. Pontet again resisted him and then collapsed in Peterson’s arms. Peterson thought Pontet was dead, and he left him and either jumped or fell from the window to a roof five feet below it. He descended from the roof to a lower one and reached the ground. A fireman, who wore a gas mask, took Pontet from the building, but he was dead. Peterson was badly burned and died as a result of his injuries eight days later. 19546-1562
