Albert H. Buckalew, 22, painter, died attempting to save Augusta K. Kelly, 5, from drowning, Bordentown, New Jersey, July 31, 1913. Augusta fell from a bridge into Crosswicks Creek 100 feet from the nearest bank, where the water was over six feet deep. When Buckalew was attracted to the scene, he took off his outer clothes and dived from the bridge into the water near her. He grasped her and swam 50 feet in a current of 5 m.p.h. and then faintly called for help. Another man jumped into the water and relieved Buckalew of the child, who was saved. Buckalew sank and did not reappear. His body was recovered an hour later. 11359-808
