Albert J. DeFlumere died attempting to rescue Matthew J. DeFlumere from burning, Blauvelt, New York, October 26, 1996. Matthew, 6, was in a second-floor bedroom of his family’s two-story house when, at night, fire broke out on the first floor, in the kitchen. His father, DeFlumere, 49, postal clerk and bus driver, discovered the fire and, breaking out a window in the master bedroom, which adjoined Matthew’s room, aided in the evacuation of other family members to the roof of the dwelling’s first floor. As fire conditions worsened rapidly, DeFlumere turned back into the house. He and Matthew were found by firefighters near the window of the master bedroom. Both had died of smoke inhalation.
