Albert Joseph Albanese attempted to save Stephen Stanavich from drowning, Haverhill, Massachusetts, March 23, 1922. Stephen, 4, fell into the Merrimack River and was carried off by a current of 6 m.p.h. Albanese, 18, shoe worker, ran a quarter-mile along a street paralleling the river to a point that was accessible to the water. Fully clothed, he dived from a high bank, swam 18 feet from the bank, and took hold of Stephen. He then swam and drifted with him 25 feet to tree branches overhanging the water. A rope was cast to Albanese, he was drawn with Stephen to a wall at the bank, and both were lifted to the top. Stephen could not be revived. Albanese had been in the water at least eight minutes and was too exhausted to stand. 23321-1975
