Albert M. Clark, 25, real estate broker, attempted to save Bessie Breckwold, 22, and saved an unidentified man from drowning, Atlantic City, New Jersey, October 10, 1920. While bathing in the Atlantic Ocean, Mrs. Breckwold and an unidentified man were carried out from shore by a strong undertow, and Mrs. Breckwold called for help. Clark, after removing his outer clothing, waded 150 feet from shore and swam 450 feet farther to Mrs. Breckwold, who had become separated from her companion and was unconscious. Clark swam with her about 50 feet toward shore and reached the man, who at once got hold of Clark and caused him to go under the surface. Clark freed himself from the man but lost his hold on Mrs. Breckwold, and she disappeared. Clark took hold of the man and supported him at the surface for about 10 minutes, until two men in a canoe reached them. The man was taken to shore, and Clark made efforts to find Mrs. Breckwold by diving from another canoe, but he was unsuccessful, and she was drowned. 20959-1841
