Albert V. Hill, 45, cost accountant, attempted to save an unidentified boy, about 13, from drowning, Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, August 30, 1943. While bathing in rough surf in a channel between submerged sandbars in the Atlantic Ocean, the boy got into difficulty and called for help. Cross currents moved at angles to a strong offshore current. Hill waded and then swam 125 feet to a point 10 feet from the boy. He tried to swim across the current but became tired and dizzy and turned on his back for rest. Waves three feet high washed over him, and he again tried to swim toward the boy but made no progress. Meanwhile two youths who were good swimmers, having a buoy and a line 300 feet long, swam to Hill as the line was payed out by persons on shore. They held Hill, and the three were pulled to wadable water. Hill was aided to shore, where he collapsed and became unconscious. The boy was rescued in a similar manner by the youths. Hill recovered. 40027-3364
