Albert W. Simpson, 20, coal miner, helped to rescue George Spencer, 54, from a mine cave-in, Stockdale, Pennsylvania, October 9, 1906. Spencer was caught by a fall of slate. There was room for only one person to work at his release. A man began digging at the debris but was compelled by fatigue to stop. Simpson took up the work and after 15 minutes’ labor extricated Spencer. Another fall seemed to be impending and did occur an hour later. 1267-154
