Alex Neshkin saved Edward A. Hodina from drowning, Cleveland, Ohio, February 22, 1916. Edward, 13, schoolboy, broke through weak ice on Lower Shaker Lake about 170 feet from the bank, where the water was 20 feet deep. He sank under the surface, rose, and supported himself at the edge of the hole. Alex, 16, student, threw boards toward Edward from the bank, but they failed to reach him. Although he was warned not to venture on the ice, Alex, who could not swim, waded a short distance to the edge of the ice, crawled on the ice to one of the boards, and pushed it toward Edward, but it went beyond him. Alex then crawled back, had a line made by tying together the coats of 50 boys, and crawled out on the ice with the line to within a short distance of Edward. The ice sagged as he crawled, and persons on the bank warned him to be careful. The line was too short to reach Edward, and Alex again returned to the bank, lengthened the line with a piece of burlap, and crawled to within a few feet of Edward. He threw the end of the line to Edward, and Alex then pulled him out of the hole, drew him about 140 feet over the ice to the open wadable water, and carried him to the bank. Edward was semiconscious but recovered. 18959-1728
