Alexander M. Rodriguez, 24, timekeeper, saved Perry Westland, 23, printer, from drowning, Akeley, Pennsylvania, July 5, 1914. Westland, Rodriguez, and another man were thrown from a canoe into Connewango Creek, 125 feet from the bank. Westland could not swim, and the other two seized him and started to swim ashore. Westland put his arms and legs around Rodriguez, drawing him under, and the other man swam ashore alone. Rodriguez freed himself and rose. He then plunged under the surface, seized Westland by the hair, and started swimming shoreward with him. When he had gone only a few feet, he became very tired and called for help. After some delay two men reached him with a canoe. Westland was unconscious, and Rodriguez was almost exhausted when taken ashore, but both recovered. 15466-1282
