Alexander T. Rice, Jr., 14, student, saved James H. Smith, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Paris, Kentucky, September 18, 1915. James was playing on a dam in Stoner Creek and fell over it. He tried to swim out but was carried back by the eddy below the dam and submerged by the falling water. He became unconscious. Alexander ran onto the dam, dived from it, got his arm around James’s neck, and swam with him 70 feet to a boy near the bank. He was very tired, but the boy helped him to the bank with James, who was revived. 15668-1277
