Alfred Hayes, 11, schoolboy, died attempting to save Herbert A. Wachter, 10, from drowning, Cleveland, Ohio, May 3, 1913. The boys were on a raft on Lake Erie. At a point 40 feet from shore, where the water was eight feet deep, Herbert fell into the water and went beneath the surface. Albert, who knew that Herbert could not swim, dived toward Herbert and came up beside him. He grasped Herbert and tried to swim toward shore. They became separated, and Alfred went beneath the surface and was drowned. As Alfred was sinking, a man waded out and caught Herbert with a pike pole. Herbert was semiconscious. He was revived. 10788-1012
