Alice R. Geary saved Robert C. Clavio from a runaway, San Bernardino, California, January 19, 1923. Robert, 4, was standing on a sidewalk directly in the path of a runaway team that was dragging a doubletree and running at a speed of 12 to 15 m.p.h. When the team was 80 feet from Robert, Miss Geary, 54, nurse, noticed Robert’s danger, and she ran 45 feet to him. She picked him up and dodged five feet to a position behind a small tree just before the horses began passing on opposite sides of her and the tree. The check lines and doubletree then caught on the tree, abruptly stopping the horses and causing one to fall with its legs on opposite sides of Miss Geary. A line was entangled around her neck, and she was entangled with the traces. The driver then arrived and held the horses and freed Miss Geary. Her neck was scarred, and one shin was bruised. Robert was uninjured. 23197-2003
