Allan B. Baylin saved Edward A. Tackowicz from drowning, West Haven, Connecticut, August 8, 1941. While swimming in New Haven Harbor, Jackowicz, 19, pipefitter, became distressed 400 feet from shore in water eight feet deep. A companion gave him temporary aid and then desisted. From shore Allan, 17, schoolboy, who had a weak knee and was clothed except for shoes, waded and then swam 380 feet to Jackowicz, who was hysterical. Jackowicz grabbed Allan’s shoulders; but Allan pulled away, striking Jackowicz on the face. He then took hold of Jackowicz, who was exhausted, swam with great effort 380 feet to a sandbar near shore, and stood up. He and a man pulled Jackowicz, who was semiconscious, to shore. Jackowicz was revived. Allan was winded and almost exhausted, his feet were bleeding from cuts, and his knee pained. 39295-3261
