Allen D. Carter, Jr., helped to save Linda S. Hamilton from drowning, San Francisco, California, March 15, 1978. When he heard Mrs. Hamilton, 26, screaming for help in the Golden Gate, Carter, 35, dye mechanic, undressed to his undershorts, jumped into the water, and swam about 350 feet to her. She struggled with him and forced him under three times before she calmed. Carter tried towing Mrs. Hamilton but the current moved them farther from shore. Carter’s brother then arrived with a life ring, to which all three persons held until a Coast Guard boat arrived and took them aboard.
