Allen J. Evans saved H. Faye Sageser and Agnes L. Powell from drowning, Crestwood, Kentucky, June 25, 1931. Faye and Agnes, both 16, fell from a log into water eight feet deep in a small lake at a point 25 feet from the bank. Agnes, who could not swim, got hold of a man who was swimming close to the log, and Faye was trying to get on Agnes’s back. Allen, 15, schoolboy, who was a poor swimmer, swam 40 feet to Faye, towed her a few feet, and placed her hands on the log. The man broke Agnes’s hold and then left her and swam toward the bank. As Allen turned to get hold of Agnes, Faye threw her arms around his neck from behind, and they were momentarily submerged. Allen finally freed himself, and he took hold of Faye by the hair and swam more than 20 feet to wadable water. Agnes then was discovered under the surface clinging to Faye’s ankle. She was unconscious but was revived.
