Allen L. Darby, 40, captain, city fire department, rescued David W. Kears, 53, teamster, from a runaway, Atlantic City, New Jersey, March 25, 1916. Two horses that Kears was driving became frightened and ran swiftly through a crowded section, drawing a dump wagon after them by their breast-chains. Kears fell to the wagon tongue and clung there. Darby jumped onto the running board of an automobile and urged the driver to overtake the team. When the automobile came within four feet of one of the horses, Darby leaped from the running board onto the horse, caught the hames of the harness, and drew himself astride the horse. He then seized the reins and brought the horses to a stop 50 feet short of a deep ditch that crossed the street, having ridden 137 feet on the horse. Kears was badly bruised but recovered. 16377-1328
