Alvin M. Crafton, 47, farmer, saved Thomas Griffin, 17, schoolboy, and Robert Conyers, 27, farmer, from drowning, Sidney, Arkansas, July 4, 1912. Thomas, who was a fair swimmer, and Conyers, who could not swim, got into a deep hole in Piney Creek 25 feet from the bank. Conyers grabbed Thomas around the waist with both arms. They went beneath the surface and came up and then went down again. Crafton, who was upstream from them in shallow water, swam toward them. They had gone down a third time before Crafton reached them and jerked Thomas away from Conyers. Crafton swam to the bank with Thomas, who did not struggle. Crafton then swam to Conyers, who had managed to get a foothold on a stone and keep his head above the surface. He carried an eight-foot pole, and when Conyers grasped it, Crafton swam to the bank with him. Both men were in a semiconscious state when rescued, but they revived. 8957-736
