Ambrogio J. “Sonny” Giannini, 90, died on July 20, 2019, at home in Chicopee, Mass., surrounded by his loving family. Giannini was born in West Springfield, Mass., and lived in Chicopee for the last 15 years of his life. He was a retired master machinist.
Giannini served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. In 1953, he saved a drowning child, who had capsized his canoe at Watershops Pond, and he later received the Carnegie Medal in recognition. Giannini was a founding member of the Pioneer Valley Radio Control Club.
He was survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Kostanski) Giannini; four children, Maria LaFrance and her partner Scott Stewart; Michael, John and Christa Giannini; and three grandchildren, Hannah, Gabrielle and Zachary. He also leaves his canine companion, Zoey.
He was predeceased by a sister, Gloria Poulsen, and brother, Joseph.
