Ambrose E. Brennan III saved Michelle R. Adams from being struck by a train, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, November 4, 1993. At night, Ms. Adams, 20, stood on a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching at about 25 m.p.h. Brennan, 34, office manager, had followed Ms. Adams to the scene, and when he became aware that she was standing in the path of the train, he ran to her. As the train bore down on them at undiminished speed, Brennan tackled Ms. Adams from the track and held her to the ground as the train passed them moments later.
