Amos Franklin Cantrell died saving J. Edgar Horton from suffocation, New Market, Alabama, May 14, 1925. Horton, 41, farmer, was overcome by marsh gas in a well 65 feet deep. Cantrell, 37, farmer, ran 500 feet to the well and tied a rope, which was attached to a windlass, around his chest and was lowered to the bottom. He then removed the rope from himself and tied it around Horton; taking hold of the rope above Horton, he called to the men at the top to draw them up. When he was within 10 feet of the top, Cantrell fell to the bottom of the well, and his neck was broken. Horton was drawn to the top and later recovered. Cantrell was dead when he was removed from the well. 25226-2021
