Amos J. Stamper assisted in an attempt to save Andrew J. Hamilton from a mine cave-in, Brazil, Indiana, December 3, 1923. Hamilton, 35, was caught under a fall of shale in a cross cut in a clay mine. A mine driver who was 14 feet away hurried to him but was unable to lift a large slab of shale that rested on his back. Stamper, 72, clay miner, and other miners were attracted, and as they attempted to lift the slab off Hamilton, a second fall occurred. One of the miners was instantly killed. Stamper’s arm was struck by falling shale and was broken, and the mine driver was struck and held fast against the wall. Four other miners then arrived, and although bits of shale continued to drop, they freed Hamilton and the mine driver. Hamilton sustained a broken arm and cuts and bruises. Stamper sustained bruises and lacerations and was disabled about five months.. 24636-1897
