Andrè Alfred Vertefeuille, 19, laborer, attempted to save Marie Mastropietro, 21, from drowning, East Haven, Connecticut, July 8, 1928. While Miss Mastropietro was wading in Long Island Sound off Morgans Point, she stepped into deep water about 60 feet from shore and was carried farther out by a strong current. Vertefeuille, who was fully clothed, swam about 70 feet to her and tried to swim to shore but drifted about 25 feet with her in the current. He was then grasped at the neck by Miss Mastropietro, and both were submerged several times in a struggle. Vertefeuille became semiconscious, and they got separated. Vertefeuille was rescued by a man who swam to him and took him to the shore. Miss Mastropietro was drowned. 29649-2379
