Andrew B. Steffan saved Miriam T. A. Engelhardt from being killed by a train, San Mateo, California, November 1, 1962. At a railroad crossing, Mrs. Engelhardt’s sedan stalled astride a track on which a train was approaching at a high rate of speed. Steffan, 41, special agent, saw the train engine appear around a bend 750 feet away and noted that Mrs. Englehardt, 25, still was inside the sedan, gripping the steering wheel. As the engineer applied the emergency brakes, Steffan ran onto the crossing, avoiding gaps between the rails and timbers along side them, and reached the automobile. Midway the rails he opened the driver’s door and took hold of Mrs. Engelhardt, Steffan stepped backward and jerked her from the automobile as the train continued toward them at a speed of at least 60 m.p.h.
