Andrew H. Anderson attempted to save Harold B. Schumacher from being killed by a streetcar, Los Angeles, California, October 7, 1944. At night on a dimly lighted street Schumacher, 19, United States Marine, was struck by an automobile and fell unconscious across a streetcar track. Anderson, 35, automobile mechanic, who was driving his automobile on the roadway alongside the track, directed a spotlight on the track, and saw Schumacher. Aware that a streetcar was approaching from behind him, he steered his automobile at a speed of 20 m.p.h. onto the track between Schumacher and the streetcar and drove toward Schumacher. Seeing two pedestrians running toward Schumacher, Anderson stopped his automobile on the track and signaled with horn and spotlight to the motorman to stop. The motorman, who had not seen the man on the track and did not realize Anderson had stopped, did not apply the brakes until he got within 40 feet of Anderson’s automobile. The streetcar at a reduced speed of 20 m.p.h. struck the automobile, knocking it 50 feet from the track. Anderson was thrown against the steering-wheel and sustained minor bruises. The streetcar stopped 50 feet beyond the point it had struck the automobile. Schumacher, who had been dragged off the track by the pedestrians, was removed to a hospital and died soon afterward. 40309-3415
