Andrew J. Ryan, 44, grocer, saved Willamette H. Phinney, 37, from drowning, Laguna Beach, California, September 3, 1926. While Mrs. Phinney was bathing in the Pacific Ocean at Woods Cove, she was struck by a breaker and was carried in very rough water to a point 200 feet from shore. Great, jagged rocks were near her, and the breakers were eight to 15 feet high. Ryan, who was a chronic sufferer from arthritis, swam 250 feet to Mrs. Phinney. He then towed her toward shore, putting forth every effort to avoid being thrown upon the rocks. When he had swum 200 feet with her, two swimmers met him with a life-buoy and they were assisted to shore. Ryan had been in the water 15 minutes and was very tired. 28208-2344
