Andrew Surab, 40, laborer, died attempting to save John J. Carpenter, 8, from drowning, Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, February 17, 1916. John broke through thin ice 25 feet from the bank of Darby Creek. Persons on the banks threw ropes toward him, and one person broke partly through in an effort to reach him. Hearing of the accident, Surab, who could not swim, hurried to the creek and ran over the ice toward John but broke through when 25 feet from the bank. Ropes were thrown toward Surab and John, but they failed to reach them, and both were drowned. 16148-1185
