Andrias Tuglavina saved an indeterminate number of persons from the possibility of being shot, Makkovik, Labrador, Newfoundland, April 20, 1968. An intoxicated man armed with a rifle shot and killed another man in front of his home and then began firing indiscriminately at persons who emerged from three other dwellings nearby. They took cover; and the armed man began firing at the doors and windows of the dwellings, which contained about 15 persons. Tuglavina, 53, fisherman, learned of the situation and made his way unnoticed to a stand of trees 50 feet from where the man still was firing repeatedly, reloading the rifle when necessary. When the man turned his back while drawing another clip of bullets from his pocket, Tuglavina left cover of the trees and ran to within three feet of him. The man turned and pointed the loaded rifle at Tuglavina, who lunged and grasped him. Tuglavina forced the man backward, wrested the rifle from him, and threw it aside. Others then ran to them and aided Tuglavina in subduing the man.
