Anna E. Beinert, 46, housewife, rescued Betty M. Nordenholt, 8, from a rabid dog, Tompkinsville, New York, February 23, 1928. A German police dog attacked Betty near Mrs. Beinert’s home. Mrs. Beinert saw the dog biting Betty and noticed froth on its mouth. Feeling that the dog was rabid and that she might be attacked, Mrs. Beinert at once ran to the dog. The preceding day Mrs. Beinert had suffered a scratch on the palm of her hand that drew blood. She grasped the dog’s collar and gave one or two upward jerks and got the dog away from Betty. Her son then arrived and kicked the dog under the jaw, and Mrs. Beinert lost her hold. The dog then ran away from them and was later shot and killed. An examination of the dog’s head showed that it had rabies. Betty had been bitten several times on the leg. Both Betty and Mrs. Beinert were given the Pasteur treatment and suffered no ill effects. 28091-2345
