Anthony C. Pirelli, 16, schoolboy, helped to save Anthony Ciancio, 15, from drowning, Andover, Massachusetts, August 2, 1968. When he attempted to swim across a pond, Ciancio found he could not make it and turned back. Thirty feet from the bank in water seven feet deep he called for help. Pirelli, swimming nearby, swam 60 feet to Ciancio, who was submerging intermittently. Ciancio struggled with Pirelli, causing them both to be submerged briefly twice. Pirelli then called to Michael E. Gallagher for assistance. From the opposite side of the pond, Gallagher swam 180 feet to them. Pirelli, by then fatigued, swam to the bank. Ciancio grasped Gallagher, who managed to free himself. When Ciancio then sank, Gallagher dived and brought him back to the surface. Ciancio began flailing, slipped from Gallagher’s hold, and sank from sight in the turbid water. Gallagher again dived. Locating Ciancio, who then was unconscious, he took him to the surface and began towing him toward the bank. At Gallagher’s request, Pirelli aided in removing Ciancio from the water. Ciancio was revived. He recovered after being hospitalized,
