Anthony Figurski saved Lelia B. Terry from burning, Westminster, California, October 6, 1988. Mrs. Terry, 77, was asleep when fire erupted in her one-story home. Her next-door neighbor, Figurski, 29, quality control inspector, was alerted to the fire and immediately went to the scene, where he learned that Mrs. Terry was inside her bedroom. Figurski climbed through a bedroom window and, despite dense smoke and intense heat inside the house, began to crawl across the room. He found Mrs. Terry, picked her up, and carried her to the window, through which he passed her to another neighbor who had arrived. Mrs. Terry required hospitalization. Figurski suffered smoke inhalation for which he sought treatment, and he recovered.
