Anthony Keith Phillips attempted to rescue Theodore P. Freeland from burning, Monticello, Indiana, November 19, 1993. Freeland, 44, was the driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned onto its side in a highway accident. He was trapped behind the steering wheel as flames erupted in the cab. Having witnessed the accident, Phillips, 35, truck driver, ran to the scene and climbed atop the tractor. While he was effecting rescue attempts, an explosive rush of flames forced him to the pavement. Flames engulfed the cab, and Freeland died shortly of extensive burns. Phillips sustained two fractured wrists, a fractured elbow, and a laceration to his face which required sutures. He was hospitalized for two days and missed more than three months’ work.
