Anthony Nangano helped to save Charles A. Rees and William J. Hysell from suffocation, East Northport, New York, December 8, 1976. While working inside a tank that had contained fuel oil, Rees, 37, and Hysell, 42, were overcome and fell into sludge on the tank floor. Nangano, 40, maintenance supervisor, entered the tank through an opening in the top and lifted both Rees and Hysell out of the sludge. A policeman who was a member of the fire department rescue squad entered the tank and tied a garden hose around Rees. Nangano continued holding Hysell as Rees was pulled out. After Hysell had been removed the same way, Nangano started to leave but blacked out when he was part way through the opening. Others grasped Nangano and pulled him out as the policeman-fireman followed. Rees, Hysell, and Nangano recovered after hospitalization. 55560-6323
