Antonio Smith saved George W. Brown from being struck by a train, Trenton, New Jersey, May 5, 1971. Brown, 46, male nurse, fell from a railroad station platform and was knocked unconscious when his head struck a rail of the track on which a passenger train was approaching. Antonio,15, high-school student, noted the situation and jumped onto the track alongside Brown when the oncoming train was approximately 170 feet away. He was able to pull Brown from the track without delay but, to clear the train’s path fully, he had to drag him under the platform overhang. The train passed within four feet of them, stopping 90 feet beyond. A rescue squad removed Brown and Antonio from beneath the platform. Brown was hospitalized for injuries he had sustained, and he recovered.
