Arnold J. Davis, 14, schoolboy, saved Donald W. Pilosky, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 21, 1949. While playing on a pier that extended 360 feet into the Delaware River, Donald fell seven feet into water 11 feet deep and was submerged briefly eight feet from the pier. Fully clothed, Arnold dived from the pier and swam toward Donald, who again was submerged. Arnold reached the point where Donald had sunk and pulled him to the surface. Although impeded by heavy boots, he swam towing Donald to the pier. Standing on a projection beneath the surface, Arnold lifted Donald within reach of a boy who stood on the pier. The boy grasped Donald and pulled him upward onto the pier. Arnold climbed on projections to the top of the pier. Both were cold and tired but recovered.
