Arnold Rothstein attempted to save Joseph G. Vincent from drowning, Caruthersville, Louisiana, February 17, 1977. Vincent, 23, fell from a barge into the Mississippi River and, unable to swim, struggled to stay afloat. Rothstein, 27, riverboat deckhand, dived into the cold water and supported Vincent, who struggled and caused Rothstein to be submerged briefly. While Rothstein moved him toward the barge, Vincent continued to struggle; and both men were carried downstream by the current to opposite a riverboat. A line was thrown from the boat. Rothstein grasped the line but lost his hold on Vincent, who went under. Rothstein, nearly exhausted, was pulled to the boat and taken aboard. Dragging operations later located the body of Vincent. 55760-6300
