Arthur Brown died attempting to save Elmer G. Quackenbush from suffocation, Canajoharie, New York, October 5, 1925. Elmer, 17, farmhand, entered the manhole in the top of an eight-foot-high tank, in which vinegar had been made, and was overcome by carbon dioxide gas. Brown, 49, factory hand, and a coworker heard a noise inside the tank and thought someone was in the tank. Brown climbed a ladder on the outside of the tank and looked in. Elmer was sitting motionless and humped over at the foot of a ladder in the tank. Brown, who knew it was dangerous to enter a tank under those conditions, descended the ladder and on reaching the bottom was overcome. Brown and Elmer were removed 10 minutes later, but they could not be revived. 25697-2017
