Arthur J. Yost III saved Agnes Krause from drowning, Gloversville, New York, November 2, 1970. At night Mrs. Krause, 81, lost control of her two-door sedan, which plunged into a millpond and began to sink at the front end when it was in deep water about 40 feet from the bank. Yost, 21, U.S. Navy machinist, ran to the pond, entered the cold water, and swam to the sedan, which by then was almost completely beneath the surface. Submerging, Yost opened the door, entered the automobile, and probed with one hand until he located Mrs. Krause in the middle of the front seat. He took hold of her and, although she outweighed him, pulled her from the sedan as he backed out of it. Yost surfaced with Mrs. Krause and towed her to the bank, having some difficulty keeping her head above water. By then she had regained consciousness; and she recovered fully.
