Arthur L. Dees saved Debra A. Cornelius from being struck by an automobile, Chicago, Illinois, October 11, 1963. When she and other pupils were dismissed from school, Debra, 6, ran to an intersection and started across a street in which an automobile was approaching at more than 30 m.p.h. Arthur, 13, schoolboy, who was on the curb, saw Debra in the path of the oncoming vehicle and ran toward her with one arm extended. The automobile was within 20 feet of them and still traveling at undiminished speed when Arthur reached a point eight feet from the curb and within two feet of Debra. With his outstretched arm Arthur encircled Debra’s waist and pulled her to his chest as he pivoted and swung himself and Debra toward the curb. Debra barely cleared the right front fender of the vehicle, and Arthur was within 10 inches of its side as the automobile passed them without slowing.
