Arthur L. Mills died attempting to save Edward B. Johnson from drowning, Hendersonville, North Carolina, June 9, 1918. Johnson, 24, carpenter, got into difficulty in Rhododendron Lake 145 feet from shore, where the water was 20 feet deep. Mills, 35, bank cashier, who was smaller than Johnson, swam 20 feet to him, and Johnson grasped Mills around the shoulders with both arms and pinioned Mills’s arms. They bobbed up and down several times, struggling for at least a minute, and then sank and were drowned.
