Arthur Lee Wright died attempting to save Andrew P. Stinson from drowning, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, November 11, 1947. While Stinson, 34, carpenter’s helper, Wright, 34, carpenter, Lonnie C. Shiver, and other men were repairing a railroad trestle which extended across St. Louis Bay, Stinson fell into water 15 feet deep 3,750 feet from shore. He was carried beyond the trestle toward Mississippi Sound by a strong current. Wright fully clothed jumped down 14 feet to the water and swam 35 feet to within 10 feet of Stinson, who suddenly sank and was drowned. Wright attempted to return to the trestle but made no progress and called out that he could not get back. As he began drifting, men on the trestle threw cross-ties into the water, but none floated within reach. Removing his outer clothing and grasping a line held by a man, Shiver jumped into the water and swam toward Wright. The line broke, and Shiver released it. After he had swum 50 feet to within 30 feet of Wright, Wright sank and was drowned. Shiver attempted to swim back to the trestle but making no progress trod water. After he had drifted 150 feet a cross-tie floated within reach, and he clung to it. He drifted a mile and then, having been in the water 45 minutes, was picked up by a motor-boat. 41461-3581
