Arthur M. Conine saved Mary Rabinowitz, Annie Martz, and Blanche Startz from drowning, Elizaville, New York, July 22, 1921. Blanche, 9, lost control when she tried to touch bottom in water that was over her depth in Lake Charlotte at a point about 45 feet from the bank. Miss Martz, 27, and Mrs. Rabinowitz, 33, started for her not knowing the depth. Both got into deep water, and Miss Martz became unconscious and sank, Mrs. Rabinowitz taking hold of her by the hair. Conine, 18, student, wearing his clothing and shoes, waded 15 feet from the bank and swam 25 feet to Mrs. Rabinowitz, who was then under the surface. He took hold of her hair, drew her to the surface, and swam 10 feet with her to wadable water. She still held to Miss Martz, and they were taken to the bank by others. Although winded, Conine then swam 35 feet to Blanche. She was under the surface, semiconscious, and Conine took hold of her and swam with her 30 feet, 10 feet being in wadable water. He was then assisted with her to the bank.
