Arthur M. Fuhrer died helping to save Molly T. Whelan from drowning, Gearhart Beach, Oregon, August 3, 1983. Molly, 10, and her two sisters were swept from shore by a rip current in the Pacific Ocean. Fuhrer, 48, securities representative, and another man waded into the water toward the girls. After the other man took one of Molly’s sisters back to shore, he returned, seized Molly, and handed her to Fuhrer, instructing him to take her to the shore. Although Molly arrived safely on shore, Fuhrer was pulled unconscious from the water and could not be revived.
