Arthur Ray Shearer attempted to save Robert E. Lewis from drowning, Rachel, West Virginia, June 7, 1926. Robert, 6, fell from a bridge into deep water in Maudes Run 20 feet from the bank. Arthur, 10, schoolboy, wearing his clothing, swam from the bank to him. Robert threw his arms around Arthur’s neck, and they were submerged momentarily. They went under the surface again and did not rise. A man who was a good swimmer arrived at the bank, swam to the point where he saw bubbles rising, reached down, and got hold of one of the boys. They were holding to each other. The man swam to the bank supporting them, and they were revived. 27016-2120
